a Mendelssohn overture...

There is that 'extra something special' in Santosh Mitra's landscape scenes. For me, there is a hush, a melting of feelings to some soothing level...

I've had an ongoing fascination with the fate of this ex-German town in west Africa...Its decline began in the early 1930's...

the little ghost town of kolmanskop — CONNIE AND LUNA
Its fate today is so far from the bustling era of diamond mine fever, 100 years ago...

Love some of the stories attached to the town.
Pets were difficult to keep in the conditions, but one family had a pet ostrich that terrorised the townspeople. It was only partly able to redeem itself at Christmas by pulling a sled containing Father Christmas over the sand.

Miss my wanders to Hastings...a mere 30km or so away...Must try to be brave and dare to wander back again...But not today...

ping pong match...

penguins...

Apart from the amazing fact that this moment happened at all, is the more amazing fact that it is a regular event... I am even surprised that these 2 allowed a photographer to get close enough to capture them...

I first posted the image of the 2 penguins on 21st April...But I feel it is worth posting again...

a Katoomba moment...

This moment is locked into my memory as something rather special... I was with a partner at the time who had an adventurous, spur of the moment spirit... It was nothing to suddenly pack our bags on a Friday night after work and escape to the Blue Mountains for the weekend...This particular Saturday night, no one in their right mind should have been out...It was a vicious storm, with lots of thunder and lightning and belting rain...But we were, wandering rain-washed streets in Katoomba...We could hear a tinkling of sorts between thunderclaps and tried to locate the sound...That is when we discovered the bookshop...door closed but lights on... The man inside was playing a grand piano...He waved us in...So in we went...The man just kept playing, saying nothing...We wandered looking at the books for a bit, then settled on the old wooden stairs leading, we presumed, up to more books...We sat on the stairs awhile, and just listened to the man playing Mozart and other works...while the thunder and lightning played along with him...I can't remember just how it all ended...But I do know when we eventually emerged from the shop, the storm had abated, but we could still hear all the music echoing in the darkness...

getting to know...

I am now at a stage in life where I appreciate connections with people, but also value my solitude, where my thoughts can create without boundaries and too many demands...There is a special high when you find someone is on your wavelength... But there are many wavelengths in life... It is important to know if the wavelengths coming in, synchronise or intersect, are they friendly or invasive...And, if friendly, can they last...

kookaburra connections...

Kookaburras sense change. They also sense people. If you're lucky, and they live close by, you may feel part of their family. I do.

It is now more than a year since my life took a tragic turn. I feel the kookaburras check on me. I can be sitting here at my computer and happen to look out the window. There, on the verandah railing, quite regularly, is a kookaburra watching me...and stays there awhile...
